Leif Boork, who joined the Swedish women’s national team’s coaching staff as an assistant coach last season, will take over the position of the head coach

He will replace Niclas Hogberg, who was the head coach for four years.

Boork, 64, is the former head coach of the Swedish and Norwegian men’s national teams. He was coaching in top-level men’s hockey in Sweden, Norway and Finland for over 20 years before becoming a hockey expert on TV. His position as an assistant coach with the women’s national team in Sochi 2014 was a coaching comeback after five years behind the scenes.

Boork signed a contract for two years with an option for additional two seasons. His next big challenge is the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Sweden will host on home ice in Malmo. His team nicknamed Damkronorna will face Germany, Switzerland and a qualifier to be determined (Czech Republic or Japan) in Group B of the two-tiered preliminary round. Defending champion USA, Canada, Russia and Finland will start in Group A.

During the weekend at a women’s national team camp in Upplands Vasby, Boork also presented his new assistant coach on the women’s national team: Olof Ostblom. The 35-year-old was Boork’s assistant coach at Brynas Gavle from 2005 to 2008.

Also Nordic rival Finland will get a new coach for the women’s national team. Pasi Mustonen, who has been the assistant coach of the Pelicans Lahti in the highest men’s league, signed a one-year contract as head coach of the Finnish women’s national team.

Mustonen, 53, replaces Mika Pieniniemi, who announced his resignation after one year following the fifth-place finish in Sochi.
